He’s Around Here Somewhere by Dr. James V. O’Brien
A Slish Productions Publication
In this engaging memoir, Dr. James V. O’Brien invites the reader to ride shotgun with him as he drives along the highways and byways of his past—a journey that recounts a spectacular 50-year medical career. His experiences are fascinating—but hold onto your hat, as there are a few potholes along the way. O’Brien was born in London at the onset of WWII and his education, apprenticeships, residencies and practices couriered him to Dublin, Winnipeg, the Yukon, Halifax and Cape Breton. The early years of his career intrigued as well as frustrated him, as this was a world of medicine still heavily dependent upon the norms and traditions of both the Victorian and Edwardian eras. He’s Around Here Somewhere reveals the many amazing people O’Brien encountered during his career. They are recalled with humour, hope and at times, regret. However, O’Brien never strays from the “Hippocratic Oath” — Do No Harm.
James V. O’Brien resides in Big Harbour, Cape Breton, together with his wife, Heather Laskey. They have three children and two grandchildren.
