Things Are Not the Same opens a window into the life, art, and gentle wisdom of Lloyd
Morrison—a Cape Breton farmer specializing in greenhouse production, painter, husband, father, and friend whose encounter with Alzheimer’s became an unexpected journey of creativity, courage, and grace. This book traces the quiet strength that shaped Lloyd’s life.

From his decades nurturing plants in Southside Boularderie to the tender patience with which he approached art, teaching, and faith, Lloyd’s story reveals a man who created not for praise, but for connection. As Alzheimer’s began to alter his world, Lloyd turned to painting and writing to make sense of the shifting landscape within. What emerged was a body of work filled with honesty, humour, vulnerability, and hope. His paintings and words became a source of solace and insight for many, illuminating the emotional terrain of a disease often spoken of only in clinical terms. At its heart, Things Are Not the Same is a testament to love—love of art, of nature, of family, and of the small, sacred moments that shape a life. It is an invitation to remember, to feel, and to see the world through Lloyd’s compassionate eyes.

Born in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, Lloyd Morrison spent most of his life in Southside Boularderie. A graduate of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, he went on to establish Morrison’s Greenhouses, which he and his wife, Janice, operated for more than forty years. Lloyd was also a passionate painter. He volunteered with the Art of Living program at the Cancer Centre in Sydney, where he introduced patients to the healing possibilities of art during their treatment and recovery. Things Are Not the Same reflects Lloyd’s personal encounter with Alzheimer’s disease, told through his own words and paintings. Lloyd passed away in August, 2024 at the age of eighty‑eight.
