Substantive Editing

A substantive edit is designed for writers who are readying a manuscript for submission to a publisher or agent or who intend to self-publish.  Our substantive editing service is focused on the content, structure and organization of the book from the title through to the last page. The editor will, as necessary, assist the writer to clarify the central theme, adjust the pacing, suggest improvements, and draw missing pieces from the author. The service is analysis-based, whether at the document level or at the paragraph, sentence, or word level.

The editor will provide commentary on the following as applicable:

  • Clarity
  • Consistency
  • Character Development
  • Plot Development
  • Pacing
  • Once you have completed the revisions the editor will read the manuscript again and perform the following: Copy edit as it pertains to how ideas are expressed within the manuscript. For example: sentence complexity and use of active or passive verbs, conciseness, logical development of ideas, use of jargon or technical terms appropriate for the intended audience.
